The Medical Examiner is required by state law (Texas Code of Criminal Procedure, Article 49.25) to investigate all un-natural or unexpected deaths, or death where a Medical Doctor is unable to certify a cause of death. The Medical Examiner is required to be involved in cases of homicide, suicide, accidents, and deaths that are undetermined. In such instances it is our responsibility to determine the cause and manner of death.

The Lubbock County Medical Examiner’s Office follows the guidelines of the Texas Code of Criminal Procedure Chapter 49 Inquests upon Dead Bodies. Subchapter B: Duties performed by Medical Examiners; Article 49.25 is the guideline for the Lubbock County Medical Examiner.

The medicolegal autopsy at the Lubbock County Medical Examiner’s Office is performed by a trained and certified pathologist. This examination is a medical procedure that is carried out with the utmost professionalism and within the standards of competent medical practice.

We want to assure you, your loved one will be treated with the utmost respect and dignity while in our custody. The essence of a Medical Examiner’s inquiry is to help explain why the individual died. The impartial medicolegal investigation may take a prolonged period of time to complete. Our pathologist and investigators will request records to review to aide in the investigation. Typically, if information is going to be provided, our office tries to work directly with the legal next of kin. There may be limitations as to what information can be provided, depending on the circumstances surrounding the loss of a loved one.

Please contact our office for information on obtaining a copy of the autopsy report. We welcome your inquiry by phone to further guide you. When the autopsy report is completed and available the autopsy report will be released by personally obtaining a copy from the office or by US Postal Service.

Additional information for the family:

  • Arrangements for viewing may be made at the selected funeral home.
  • Depending on the circumstances, the decedent’s personal possessions will be released with the deceased to the selected funeral home or to the appropriate investigating agency.
